Adolph Ingval Hagen was born 3 Aug 1902 near Calmar, IA to AsleG. and Dordi (Borseth) Hagen. Asle was born 28 Sep 1858 in Flaa, Hallingdal, Norway and came with his parents to the U.S. in 1861. Dordi was born 10 Sep 1865 at Oksendal southwest of Trondheim, Norway, and came to the United States in 1884 and married Asle in 1887.

Adolph married Myrtle Luella Moe 4 May 1927 in Glenwood Lutheran Church parsonage. Myrtle was born 6 Dec 1903 in Glenwood Twp. to Otto and Mina (Prestesater) Moe. Otto was born 24 May 1875 in Glenwood Twp. to Anders and Martha (Johnson) Moe, both of whom emigrated from Sogn, Norway in 1866. Mina was born 19 Sep 1874 in Toten, Norway to Andreas and Johanne Andersdtr. Bliliestuen who emigrated in 1887 and settled in Glenwood Twp.

Adolph and Myrtle had 2 children: Dean and Janice. Dean married LaRue Lee and they became parents of 4 children: Constance, Richard, Georgiann and David. (See Dean & LaRue Hagen history). Janice married David Lillegraven in Glenwood Lutheran Church on 20 Jan 1963. They have 3 children and one grandson: Joel, Michael and Carrie. Janice and David lived in Charles City, lAfrom 1963 to 1995 when they moved to Plainfield, IA. David works in a machine shop in Janesville and Janice works at Floyd County Hospital in Charles City. Joel their older son graduated from University of Northern Iowa, Cedar Falls and lives in SanDiego, CA and works for Holiday Inn. Michael and his wife Cheryl (Tabor) live in Des Moines and work at Mercy Hospital. Carrie, their daughter, married Troy Rover. They have one child: Bret David. They make their home in Charles City.

Adolph attended rural grade school and parochial school near Calmar and was confirmed at Calmar Lutheran Church. Myrtle attended grade school and parochial school in Glenwood Twp. and was confirmed at Glenwood Lutheran Church.

Because his father Asle was in poor health and died when Adolph was 18, Adolph had to help his mother with the farming operation and did not complete eighth grade. He continued to farm with his mother before he married Myrtle and for a short time after when the couple began farming for themselves. Before her marriage Myrtle worked doing household duties and for a time was employed at the first Aase Haugen Home in the country along the railroad track between Decorah and Calmar. Adolph and Myrtle moved from the Calmar area in 1933 to a farm in Glenwood Twp. once owned by Myrtle’s uncle, Olai Moe. They rented farm land until 1944 when they bought the Moe farm. Another farm was added a few years later and they farmed until 1966 when they retired to Decorah. During retirement Adolph worked for many years for the Decorah Park Commission where he used the skills learned during his farming years and Myrtle continued her role as homemaker. Adolph died 25 Apr 1991 and Myrtle is living at Aase Haugen Home in Decorah.

Adolph and Myrtle farmed during a time of cooperation among farm families. Men were involved in exchange work and ladies were busy with meals for the men and assisting in farm chores. Rural school programs, card-playing, socializing with family and neighbors, Saturday nights in Decorah and radio occupied their leisure time. Adolph was active in farm organizations and both were active in rural school activities and church. Later years they were involved with Decorah Senior Citizens, television, grandchildren and great-grandchildren for their enjoyment.
